Blauvelt Man Gets State Prison for DWI

Tip to Orangetown police led to arrest in Blauvelt.

A Blauvelt man who pleaded guilty to a felony drunken driving charge has been sentenced to 1 1/3 to 4 years in state prison.

Luis Jose Avendano Barrera, 35, of 380 Blauvelt Road, Blauvelt, pleaded guilty on July 16 after a 9:50 p.m. incident on May 20, when Orangetown Police recieved a tip about the driver of a pick up truck who stopped to ask where his house was because he could not find it.

While checking out the tip, police on Blauvelt Road spotted the truck being driven by Barrera, according to Rockland County District Attorney Thomas Zugibe. At the time, Barrera appeared intoxicated and Zugibe said Barrera faild field sobriety tests.

Zugibe said tests showed Barrera had nearly twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system. At the time, Zugibe said Barrera was also facing a DWI charge in the Village of Spring Valley.

Barrera was sentenced in Rockland County Court in New City by Judge Charles Apotheker.
