A major car accident in New City on the Fourth of July required one woman to be airlifted from the scene, and snarled traffic on the Palisades Interstate Parkway.
An SUV carrying six people flipped off the road and landed upside down in the adjacent woods at about 5 p.m. Authorities said no other cars were involved in the accident.
Emergency workers had to use a hydraulic cutter to remove one woman from the wreck, and she was then airlifted to Westchester Medical Center.
Firefighters set up a landing zone near Exit 11 to fly the injured woman out.
The other five people were out of the Toyota when authorities arrived. Witnesses said they were able to get out of the vehicle on their own and with the assistance of motorists who stopped to help.
New City Fire Chief Kenny Flynn said the car contained many personal items. Family members said the group was traveling from Bergen County, NJ, to a family gathering in Pomona.
Police believe a blown tire may have resulted in the accident
Authorities were quick to respond despite the holiday; emergency workers from the New City Fire Department and New City, Nanuet and Spring Hill Ambulance Corps were on site and closed a portion of the roadway for the rescue effort.
A total of three ambulances were at the scene, and about 20 volunteer firefighters.
