5 Drivers Arrested At DWI Checkpoint In West Nyack

Clarkstown police, Sheriff's Department team up for late-night effort to take drunken drivers off the road.

Five people were arrested at a DWI checkpoint run late Saturday night in West Nyack by Clarkstown police and the Rockland County Sheriff's Department.

The checkpoint took place on Route 59 at Crosfield Avenue, starting at 11 p.m. Saturday and running until 3 a.m. Sunday. One of the arrests was a felony because the driver had previously been convicted of DWI, and another driver had to be chased by police because she failed to stop for a police officer.

Police said the following were arrested:

— At 2:40 a.m. Sunday, Lauren Acevedo, 22, of Orangeburg was arrested after she was stopped by police and appeared to be in an intoxicated condition. When and officer tried to question her, police said she drove away and had to be chased by a police vehicle.

She was stopped in the area of Sickletown Road and Route
59. She failed a field sobriety test at the scene and was taken back
to the police mobile processing van, where police said she failed a breathalyzer
test.

Acevedo was issued a ticket to appear in Town Court on Jan. 25, 2012, to answer the charges of Driving While Intoxicated, a misdemeanor, and Failure to Obey a Police Officer, a traffic infraction.

— At 12:56 a.m. Sunday, John O'malley, 40, of Washington Township, NJ. was
arrested after he failed a field sobriety test and also a breathalyzer test at the police mobile processing van. He was released on an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in Clarksotwn Town Court on Dec. 21 to answer the charge of Driving While Intoxicated, a misdemeanor, and Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, a misdemeanor.

— At 1:45 a.m. Sunday, Deborah Sheppard-Pauline, 58, of Memphis, TN, was arrested after she failed a field sobriety test at the scene and failed a
breathalyzer test at the police mobile processing van. She was
released on an appearance ticket to appear in Town Court on Jan.
15, 2012, to answer the charge of Driving While Intoxicated, a
misdemeanor.

— At 2:15 a.m. Sunday, Jonathan Pfaff, 28, of Upper Nyack was arrested after he failed a field sobriety test at the scene and a breathalyzer test
in the police mobile processing van. He was released on an appearance
ticket and is set appear in Town Court on Jan. 16, 2012, to answer
the charge of Driving While Intoxicated, a misdemeanor.

— At 2:35 a.m. Sunday, Kyle Thompson, 28, of Pearl River, was arrested after he failed a field sobriety test at the scene and a breathalyzer test
in the police mobile processing van. He was issued an appearance
ticket to appear in Town Court on Jan. 16, 2012, to answer
the charge of Driving While Intoxicated, a felony. Police said his charge is a felony because Thompson was convicted of DWI in January 2010.
