19-Year-Old New City Woman Charged With DWI After Route 59 Accident

Police: Witness took keys away from driver.

A 19-year-old New City woman was charged with drunken driving this morning after her car was found in the middle of Route 59 in West Nyack with extensive damage to both front tires, according to .

Kristen Maas was found to be very intoxicated, police said, when town officers went to investigate a 2:45 a.m. report of an erratic driver in the area. When police arrived, they found a 2006 Volkswagen with tire damage on Route 59.

Police said a witness told officers the Volkswagon was moving erratically on the state highway and crashed into the median and a curb, causing the tire damage. Police said the witness had taken the car keys from Maas.

Maas refused to take a field sobriety test, police said, and she was taken to Clarkstown police headquarters in New City, where she took a chemical breath test for alcohol. Police said the test showed Maas' blood alcohol content to be 0.28 percent, more than three times the legal limit.

Maas was released later this morning pending an April 9 hearing in Clarkstown Town Court on a charge of driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor.
