ST. THOMAS AQUINAS COLLEGE INSTRUCTOR PUBLISHES POETRY MANUSCRIPT
NO APOCALYPSE A HIT

(September 30, 2013-Sparkill, NY) -- Monica Wendel, Assistant Professor of Composition and Creative Writing at St. Thomas Aquinas College, has published a poetry manuscript No Apocalypse, announces Dr. Robert Murray, Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences.

No Apocalypse is a collection of poetry written by Wendel between 2007 and January of 2012. In June of 2012, it was named the winner of Georgetown Review Press' poetry manuscript prize by Bob Hicok, American poet and Associate Professor of Creative Writing at Virginia Tech. No Apocalypse was published by the Georgetown Review Press a year later. The manuscript is divided into four sections: political poems, dream poems, animals & cities, and money & ghosts.

“These poems feel genuine in the best sense,” says Hicok of Wendel’s No Apocalypse. “Necessary to the poet and honest in what they love or push away from. I’ve been reluctant to use this word in blurbs, but these poems really are charming – they cast a spell that makes me want to live with them, to open that window and crawl through,” added Hicok.

“Wendel is expert at precise observation, and her voice is immensely appealing—intimate, lively and sly,” says Deborah Landau, Director of NYU's creative writing program. “There’s abundant wit, intelligence and humor here, too. A memorable collection from a promising young poet, No Apocalypse sings with the immediacy of life as it is being lived right this minute in New York City,” added Landau.

Wendel, a resident of Bushwick (NY), graduated magna cum laude from the State University of New York at Geneseo, where she studied philosophy with a minor in creative writing. She earned her Master of Fine Arts in poetry writing from NYU, where she was awarded Goldwater and Starworks teaching fellowships. Wendel began teaching at STAC in fall 2010.

The Georgetown Review is a magazine containing the works of English faculty and undergraduates at Georgetown University. One issue of the magazine is published per year, along with a collection of poetry that is chosen through contest.
