Obituary: Sister Ann Louis Byron, Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt.

She was 97.

Sister Ann Louis Byron, O.P., formerly Louise Byron, a member of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt, New York for the past 82 years, died on April 25, 2013 in  St. Martin de Porres Infirmary. Sr. Ann Louise was 97 years of age.

Sr. Ann Louise was born to James Byron and Louise Mayrer on Sept. 7, 1915, in New York City.  She entered the Sisters of St. Dominic on Jan. 31, 1931, from St. Mary’s Parish, Bronx, NY.  Sr. Ann Louise received the Dominican habit on Sept. 9, 1931, professed first vows on Sept. 12, 1932, and final vows on Sept. 8, 1936. 

Sister held a B.S. in Education from Fordham University and a B.A. in Liturgical Music from St. Joseph’s College in Indiana. She also studied at Pius XII Institute, Florence, Italy 1959-60.

Sr. Ann Louise’s many years of active ministry were devoted to the education of youth.  Her ministries included the following schools in the Bronx: Holy Spirit, 1933-1939; St. Benedict’s, 1939-1945, and Lavelle School for the Blind, 1954-59.   Sister ministered in St. Mary Star of the Sea Parish, 1981-1997 as Religious Education Coordinator, Parish Minister and Director of Senior Citizens Programs.  Sister also taught in Holy Cross, New York City, 1932-33; Immaculate Conception, Amenia, NY,  1945-1951; Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Academy, Goshen, NY, 1951-1954;  St. Dominic’s School/ Dominican College, Blauvelt, NY/ Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, Tappan, NY, 1960-1969; St. Martin de Porres, Poughkeepsie, NY, 1969-70, and St. Margaret’s School, Pearl River, NY, 1970-1981.    In 1997 Sister returned to Blauvelt where she willing accepted various services.  In 2002, due to failing health Sister retired to St. Martin de Porres Infirmary, St. Dominic’s Convent, Blauvelt, NY.

In addition to her religious congregation, Sr. Ann Louise is survived by a brother, John Byron and sister-in-law Louise, of Garnerville, NY. She was predeceased by her sister, Anna, and four brothers: William, George, Fred, and James.
