Obituary: Edward Ford, 71

Edward L. Ford of Nyack, NY, a retired police officer, lawyer and musician, died on June 24 at age 71 after a long illness.

Ford was born to Catherine D. and Emanuel J. Ford, formerly of the Bronx and Staten Island, on Jan. 21. An avid Yankee and Jets fan, Ford became a New York State Police officer in 1963, until he retired as lieutenant in 1984. 

He attended graduate school for public administration from CW Post College of LIU and Law at St. John’s University where he got his juris doctorate. He became a lawyer in 1983 and practiced until he retired in 2010.

He also studied trumpet under Joseph Alessi Sr. for three years at the Manhattan School of Music and played in many bands in the Lower Hudson Valley, including the Rockland County Symphony and the Rockland County Concert Band.

He also ran in local road races over the years, and most recently won a trophy for his age group in the Police Emerald Society 5K Run in Piermont in 2011.

He is survived by his daughter, Kathleen and son-in-law Barry McKernan; his grandson William I. G. McKernan; as well as his brother Francis. He is predeceased his two other brothers, Thomas and William.

Visiting services were held on Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 PM at the Hannemann Funeral Home, Inc. in Nyack. The Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Ann’s RC Church, 19 Jefferson St. Nyack.
