Henry Mayer of Valley Cottage

Henry Mayer, 94, of Valley Cottage, passed away on February 19, 2014.

Henry was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He was a decorated Army veteran of World War II serving in Europe. He was a true American hero and was awarded many medals including a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.

Henry married Margaret Toolan on October 24, 1949. They were married 59 years. Henry was her devoted and loving care giver until her death in 2009.

Henry worked for the American Bank Note Company in Bronx, NY for over 40 years.

He was a devoted member of the Valley Cottage Volunteer Fire Department for 55 years. The fire department members were truly his family and his friendships were of great enjoyment for him - especially his "4:30" friends who met each day for socialization and a beer.

Henry was also a member of the Valley Cottage Sportsman's Club of which he was an original member. He also enjoyed fishing trips each year to Lake Placid with his close friends.

Henry was a parishioner of St. Paul's Church in Congers since moving to Valley Cottage in 1956.

Henry is survived by his three children: George (Barbara) Mayer of Kinderhook; Mary Ann (Dave) Schubmehl of Delmar; and Kathie (Rob) Paul of Rotterdam. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Allyson Mayer; Mike Davis; Jessica, Becky, and Stephen Schubmehl; and Kristin and Bryan Paul. T

The family would like to thank the staff at Pine Valley Rehab for the wonderful care they gave Henry.

Arrangements were handled by Higgins Funeral Home in Congers. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Valley Cottage Volunteer Fire Department.
