Nature Inspired

More than a few reasons to take up gardening.

With several topics in mind for the blog this week, I wasn't quite sure if it would be the relationship or magic blog—but thanks to a trip to Home Depot garden center and a few e-mails asking some planting advice, there was the answer! How could I not blog about my second favorite topic: gardening! (The first topic, of course, being my grandchildren.)

Frankly, I am not a master gardener and have taken no courses or classes—I rely solely on my own experiences and love of Mother Earth. I have always been drawn to the beauty and fragrance of a garden. Be it herbs or flowers, there has always been something so fulfilling in witnessing the powers of Nature and the magic of soil that lead me to dig deeper and explore. To be attuned to Natures elements allows creativity to blossom (excuse the pun) and gives a sense of accomplishment each time we nurture one tiny seed that will bring forth so many gifts.

Tending a garden is a wonderful way to relax—and let's be honest, what inner child doesn't like to play in the dirt? But I know what many of you are thinking right now: Who has time for gardening? My answer is: You do! One hour less on Facebook a week, one less trip to the Mall. Replacing technology with Nature is healthy and a much needed distraction. You can find some time for something that will reap so many benefits in the long run.

I'm not suggesting you must tend an acre patch of land, although blessed are those with that much space and time. Even a small plot can be ever so charming. Don't worry if you don't have a yard—herbs and flowers can be grown in pots and planters on a deck or patio or on a bright window sill. Also, gardening as a family can provide some quality time away from video games and cell phones and get you all out in the fresh air. Children take great pride in maintaining a garden and learn lessons that will stay with them a lifetime. Working the soil and coming up with new and unusual garden ideas  each chidren a new respect for Earth... as they have fun doing it!

Many of us grow for the security of knowing our plants are pesticide free, many of us grow in order to extend the bounty by creating items that will go on long after the last flower has faded. Vinegars, bath products , teas and more are one way of  extending the gifts of Nature. And, I will tell those that profess not to have the time, that you are the ones that need to de-stress and relax the most, and Nature is the best way to do it! Really, who hasn't had their spirits lifted by a plant or a scent? Over the course of the next few weeks, I'd like to share with you some tips and folklore on some popular plants, and hope as you travel down the garden path with me you too will be inspired to explore, dig deep and unearth a whole new world.
