Palisades Lore: Zeus Strikes 500, Filosa Cycles

It’s been a wild season for Tim Trenary so far. He was the first overall pick to the Orioles in this year’s draft, where he carried them to all five of their current wins. By July, he was traded to the Tigers in their attempt to salvage their roster, and potentially season. Tim and the Tigers are off to a perfect start on that front, as they swept the Orioles, and of course Trenary was a big part of it.

zeus works in mysterious ways

As the Game One starter, Zeus battled former teammate Nick Santana in a scoreless battle for three innings when, after a walk, Di Gioia blasted the only two runs of the game over the fence. And wouldn’t you know it, Zeus struck out all 15 of his batters in the victory. Stuck at 498 career punch outs, he asked Anthony Bevilacqua if it would be okay to start Game Two in order to “get it out of the way.” A-Bev agreed, so on the second out of the first inning, Oliver Avallone tied his name to Palisades WBL history as Tim Trenary became the first ever pitcher to strikeout 500 career batters.

Congratulations to Zeus! Here are some words from the man himself, and guys around the league…

As for having 500, it’s just a number. I may be the first (which I’,m proud to do) but with the talent in this league on the carpet I certainly won’t be the last. All in all, I’m just happy to be a part of this league and look forward to reaching 1000 in June of 2016. If my arm is still attached by then. – Tim Trenary

I hope the next 500 are on my team. – Anthony Bevilacqua

Incredible achievement. – Brett Bevelacqua

Ridiculous. Just the thought of it wears my arm out! – Bo Muschinsky

Awesome! My money’s on him reaching 1000! – Dakota Kenny

I’m just lucky I’ve never faced him! Haha. – Joe Gallo

Tim is something special. His presence on the carpet K’s some guys before he even throws a pitch. It’s an honor to have been struck out by him several times. He’s also the hardest working guy in the PWBL. – Jay Paraskevas

It’s awesome. he’s one of the fiercest competitors I’ve ever known so it’s well-deserved. I wish I could say that it’s a record that would stay in place for a while, but with the young talent in this league, I think it’s a milestone that we’ll see plenty of other guys reach in a couple of years. – Garret Torres

Tim, you deserve every single accolade and success, and more!

Lastly, here’s a look at Palisades WBL’s all-time strikeout list.

___

That wasn’t the only special event of Sunday’s action. Ralph Filosa, Palisades WBL Original, had a career day. He hit for the fifth cycle in PWBL history, and third player this year. Filosa (2013), Bevilacqua (2013)*, Murphy (2013)*, Turitz (2009) and Colluzzi (2009). * More on them tomorrow.

In Game One in the Giants series with the Brewers, Filosa went 4-6 with a ribbie, four runs, a win, and lots of praise. Between innings two and four, at-bats two through five, Filosa hit for the cycle…in reverse order! It started with a screaming solo shot down the left field line in the second. A scorching triple to right center in the third. A double just past the reach of Maniscalco in left center in the fourth. And finished with a single in the fifth.

His day wasn’t finished, as he laced a frozen rope triple to right in Game Two, for his second triple of the day and third of the season. Tying him with Diamondbacks Torres and Stengel for the league lead. With three triples they tie about 20 players for the single season record for triples.

With that, here are some words from big guy himself, and other players from around the league…

It helps with building my confidence at the plate. But the Giants don’t care about individual stats. We have one goal in mind, and that’s to win the championship! – Ralph Filosa

I’m happy for him. He’s a good guy and a true veteran. – Billy Murphy

Special moment, doing it in backwards order was great. Ralph is without a doubt the nicest guy in the league so I am really happy for him. – Anthony Bevilacqua

He came through! Best performance of his career! – Sean Ryan

Ralph looks well-balanced and comfortable this season at the plate, and took me for a triple as well. Could be some kind of renaissance, and he’s lookin like a steal as the last pick in the draft! – Bo Muschinksy

It was his day. Every pitch was right to the sweet spot. Congrats to Ole Bunk Weed! – Jay Paraskevas

All I can say is that it was fucking awesome. I think it’s an inspiration to the players that a vet can have an amazing day at the dish like he did. – Tim McElrath

As his teammate for the second season now, I can tell you have selfless and insightful a person and teammate Filosa truly is. It’s an honor to call you not just my teammate, but also my friend. Mazel tov, Ralph!
