November 8: A Call to Action

November's Elections are fast approaching; now is the time to become engaged

The tally is in—Rockland's Democratic and Republican County Committees have released their lists of declared and nominated candidates for this November's elections, setting up what will be 71 races throughout the county. With the races in place, there rests one key responsibility for the citizens of Rockland: engage in the political process.

In this great democratic system we live in, we the people hold the power to electing government officials. But as past participation rates in Rockland's elections indicate, we often take this power for granted by choosing not to engage and cast a vote. Look at the greater picture though; all of our elected officials hold responsibilities and powers that in one way or another effect the lives of our families, friends, and neighbors. And as a citizen of Rockland, wouldn't you want to know whether your elected officials are going to work to the best of their ability to help make this great community even better? I know I certainly do. Complacency hinders progress; we must continue to challenge our elected officials to do more and do better, and to elect officials who are truly dedicated to improving our communities.

Many citizens of Rockland have expressed disappointment with the status quo; but do not be discouraged. More than four months remain to become active in this year's election, and really find out the positions and visions of each candidate. As always, the most crucial component of political participation is voting. Whether you are 18 or 98, register to vote if you have not already, our votes really do make a difference.

The first act towards building our communities' futures rests in the hands of the citizens; through voting. FDR once stated, "Nobody will ever deprive the American people of the right to vote except the American people themselves, and the only way they could do this is by not voting." Let us make this November's election truly meaningful by actively engaging in the political process. Together, by choosing to participate and exercising our power to vote, we have the ability to help make a measureable impact on the future of Rockland County.
