Multitasking for the Holidays

I came across this fantastic article about the fallacy of multi-tasking and I have to say I’m happy to see this in print.  Especially when you are a new mommy you find yourself involved in activities you would never imagine.

Yesterday it was cleaning up spilled Cheerios in the story time library room (which is a no food zone) and emailing article updates to my editor.  Of course one Cheerios mess turned into a bigger mess and the wrong email was sent to the wrong person.

I used to be able to do this better- I’m not sure if I lost the momentum with age or it’s more complicated than that.  I do know I used to be able to do multiple things well.  I used to work in a busy newsroom writing lead stories, anchoring, putting on lipstick etc.  I do think when you are at work you should be at work and sometimes you can't focus on cleaning a toddler mess when you are conducting an interview.

Its not just me - there was time when we weren't connected to 24 hour news and smart phones.  I miss the time for reflection.  So I’ve decided because I can’t multitask, I’m giving myself a break this season.  No crazy gift buying and entertaining.  I’m grateful for my health, my family and several invitations to friends and family for Thanksgiving, Hanukkah and Christmas.  Which means no hosting just being a guest - that brings a gift and a helping hand....

Happy Holidays Everyone!
