First Year Birthday Fun

Some local finds and ideas to help you plan the first birthday.

We made it to the first year!!  My husband and I just celebrated our daughter's first birthday. It has been an unbelievable 12 months and of course you can’t just say happy birthday, you have to do something. A tip for marking this landmark event, keep it simple and fun. Your little one may be the actual birthday girl or boy but this party is for the parents; you made it through the 12 months despite the sleepless nights, round the clock feedings and mystery crying spells. For my baby’s day I tried to keep the guest list small, and the food tasty. Don’t be a hero – no matter the size of the gathering try to get someone else to cook!  (And while you’re at it get some babysitting help – more about that later).

Rockland Bakery ended up being my one stop shopping for deli sandwiches and the most delicious birthday cake. I also decided to end the occasion with gourmet chocolates from Chocolaterie – a nice touch according to my guests. This can be a busy day no matter how big the party, so try to get some extra hands for baby maintenance. There’s no shortcut to buying and putting up the decorations, cleaning up and preparing for guests so have those extra hands to soothe the birthday baby helps. So enjoy the day mommies, you deserve it, these milestones are only going to get more complicated with age…
