Summer-Time Memories

Nyack's delicious—and now-defunct—eateries

It seems to me that one has to hop in their car and drive somewhere else if they want to purchase some of the essentials we need to enjoy this summer.

At $4 a gallon, that doesn't seem practical to an old Nyacker.

Back a bunch of years, all one had to do was walk downtown and you could buy just about everything you wanted. Today, we enjoy the summer's fresh fruits and vegetables at our farmers market. There used to be a great vegitable market on Main Street run by a local family: Tony Ferrara ran the Ferrara & Boasi market at 81 Main Street. He was open every day with goods direct from the local farms.

There were also plenty of treats available all over town: Tromm's Deli was known for the best potato salad around; Oscar Luleich's Bakery made the freshest and sweetest Crumb Buns my mouth ever tasted; Fresh Fish was the specialty of Charlie Sutera's store on Franklin Street.

Want fresh meat for a burger off the grill? You had a choice: Stern's Market on Main or Reliable Market on the corner of Main & Midland. How about some great sausage from the Nyack Pork Store? And of course our ice cream stores that I chatted about .

Nyack was home to dozens of little shops, and for a long time two larger supermarkets, too: The A&P down on Broadway and the Grand Union on Main. Even they moved out of the village... no place to park?

Just about the only way to get some food in Nyack today is to have someone else cook it for you. Hmm...  how much is it to fill up the gas tank again?
