Another Nyack Trivia Quiz

See how your memory is of our river village

It seems to me Patch readers enjoy having their memories tested; they love thinking back to days long gone, and seeing if they remember as much about Nyack as I do. So I have put together another quiz—see how many of the questions you can answer:

1. Back before the NYS Thruway came to town and decimated South Nyack, there was actually a little center of the village. Can you tell me the four businesses on each corner of Cornelison and Franklin Streets?

2. At one time (a long time ago), Upper Nyack was to be the home of the seminary for the New York Archdiocese. Can you tell me the name of the Catholic Priest who was charged to build the school? (Hint: he would later go on to become the first NY Cardinal.)

3. If you lived in Nyack in the 50s and early 60s, you shopped in the village. Tell me what Main Street store had a major department in their basement.

4. Speaking of stores: can you name the four shoe stores in the village in 1960?

5. Where was the Norway Diner?

6. Where was the PT?

7. At one time our village was home to four Funeral Homes. Can you name them?  (And extra credit if you tell me where they were located.)

8. Our magnificent YMCA on Broadway was built in 1927—where was it before then?

9. At one time there was a Nyack “Police Booth.” Any idea where it was located?

10. He owned one of the most expensive Automobile Dealerships in the village, but told me once he never sold a car to anyone living in Nyack. Any idea who he was?

11. A long-time resident of Upper Nyack was also a huge landowner in NYC. At one time he was given the title of “The Father of Off-Broadway Theater.” Who was it?

12. Where was the first Chinese Restaurant in Nyack? Remember the owners’ names?

13. It was called the German Lutheran Church when it was in Nyack. When it moved, the name changed. Where is the church located and what is the new name? And if you know where the German Lutheran church was located, do you also know where the German Presbyterian Church was?

14. Now a question for the not so faint-of-heart: she owned a story on Main Street, and she also lived there and in the summer months and could be seen sitting outside caning chairs. What was her name and the name of her store?
