Historical Society of the Nyacks Open House

When the Historical Society of the Nyacks opens the doors of its new headquarters to the public on Saturday, May 7, it will celebrate not only having a space to call its own, but also the return to Nyack of a beautiful and unique patchwork quilt.

This "signature quilt" has the names of 50 women and girls from the area, one square of which is signed "Sarah Christie, Nyack 1862".  Somehow this quilt ended up at a thrift shop in Harwich, MA, on Cape Cod.  Fortunately the shop manager recognized the Rockland County names and knew the quilt was a treasure to be returned to the Nyack community.  After stops in Pearl River and Valley Cottage, the quilt made its way to the Historical Society of the Nyacks where it can be seen.

To learn more about the quilt and its signers, and to see other historic items such as a piano made in Nyack's Tallman Piano Factory and a sewing machine from the Wilcox and Gibbs factory on Cedar Hill Avenue, come to our Open House at Suite L-2 of the Depew House, 50 Piermont Avenue in Nyack, behind the library, between 1 and 3 p.m. on May 7th.
