A NIGHT OF MAGIC

The Rockland County YMCA will host its annual Night of M.A.G.I.C. (Making A Genuine Impact on Children), at the Nyack Seaport on Friday, November 19, 2010 to benefit YMCA youth and teen programs.  Among our honorees for 2010 are Joan E. Moffett who will be recognized for her achievements as a YMCA volunteer and community leader and Nyack College which will receive a Community Service Award.

Joan Moffett is well known as a successful business woman and leader in the Nyack Community. She managed the rental office of West Shore Towers in Nyack for many years and was recognized as "Woman of the Year" for the Business and Professional Women's Club in 1990.  Joan volunteered her talents to serve on the YMCA Board of Directors and was elected as the first woman Chairperson of the Board.  She continues to be a loyal supporter of the YMCA and is a strong advocate for community programs that benefit children and families. In addition, Joan is an Honorary Member and Past-President of the Rotary Club of Nyack. According to Julie Prevost, YMCA Board Chair, "Joan has been an enthusiastic leader of many organizations and continues to have a positive impact on the children and families in Nyack." Currently, Joan serves as Vice President of the Nyack Public Library's Board of Directors and serves on the Library Expansion Project.

Joan grew up in New Rochelle and graduated from Wellesley College in 1952.  She moved to Nyack in 1968 where she raised her family.  Her sons Craig and Scott graduated Nyack High School and later graduated from Brown University and Vanderbilt University, respectively. 

She is the proud grandmother of her six grandchildren: Samantha Moffett, who is studying to be a physician at Georgetown; Jesse Moffett, a Math Major at Smith College; Hayden and Harrison Moffett, who are attending Horace Mann School; and James and Russell Moffett who are attending school in Nashville, Tennessee.

Nyack College is widely recognized as a Christian liberal arts college offering undergraduate and graduate programs to a co-educational, ethnically diverse student body. Since it moved to South Nyack in 1897, its students and faculty have played an important role in the Nyack community.
