The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, better known by its abbreviated title The Hobbit, is a children's book written by J. R. R. Tolkien and first published in 1937. It received wide critical acclaim and was nominated for the Carnegie Medal and awarded a prize from the New York Herald Tribune for best juvenile fiction. It is one of the most popular children’s books of all time. On December 14th this beloved book will come alive on the enormous IMAX Palisades screen at the Palisades Center.

To celebrate this milestone in cinema history, the IMAX Theatre at Palisades Center will host a family event on Wednesday, December 19th at 6:00pm co-sponsored by NYMetroParents. All are encouraged to attend in costume. The event will be a fundraiser for the Nanuet Family Resource Center. A delightful basket of Hobbit themed prizes donated from Barnes & Noble at the Palisades Mall and other Hobbit related merchandise will be raffled to benefit the Family Resource Center.

Everyone who attends will receive hot chocolate gift certificates from Barnes & Noble. Tickets are now on sale and can be purchased on line at www.imax.com/palisades.

The Hobbit follows the quest of home-loving hobbit Bilbo Baggins who is determined to secure his share of treasure guarded by Smaug, the Dragon. Personal growth and forms of heroism are central themes. The sequel to The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, has already been turned into a series of movies and The Hobbit will actually be told in a series of three movies, An Unexpected Journey (2012), The Desolation of Smaug (2013) and There and Back Again (2014).

The series will act as a prequel trilogy to Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy and will star Ian McKellen, reprising his role as Gandalf, Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield, and Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug. Several other actors will reprise their roles from The Lord of the Rings, including Andy Serkis, Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchett, Christopher Lee, Ian Holm, Elijah Wood, and Orlando Bloom

I guess better late than never. LaCorte is serving his 4th year as Mayor and was Trustee for I thinkRead More 4 years before that. This year is the only time he has brought the idea to the village about participating in this program. He is motivated by the opportunity of getting positive press for his County Executive campaign. The village should have been involved in this program ( as well as the Americorps program) long before this. On a positive note, hopefully the Village will continue this worthwhile partnership for many years to come.
