Infrastructure, a Bridge Jumper and School District Changes

The week of Aug. 2

The last week was an eventful—and tragic—one for Nyack and Piermont residents.

The week began with more news of the possible installation of a Walgreens pharmacy in Nyack. The pharmacy would replace the shuttered Hilltop Restaurant which stands at the entrance to the village. Village officials and Walgreens representatives are currently at odds over the business' desire to install a large, electronic road-side sign—it's a matter that will be discussed, and possibly settled, at a board meeting next week.

Also in the vein of construction: Nyack Library's overhaul is expected to be finished this fall. The project will result in a redone computer facility, history room and more.

On Monday, the Tappan Zee Bridge housed two grim incidents—a fatal car accident and a jumper. The jumper, a professional gambler from White Plains, was transported to Westchester Medical Center with back injuries.

On Friday, the bridge was the stage for yet another accident—an SUV flipped after striking a displaced jersey barrier, snarling traffic. There were no major injuries.

Also pertaining to the bridge this week (but in an collision-free way—phew): the mayors of Nyack and South Nyack weighed in on the proposed new Tappan Zee Bridge. Their ideas? A tunnel and a village park.

The week culminated with the news that Nyack schools superintendent, Valencia Douglas, will be transferring to Pocantico Hills—a decision that has parents polarized.

And don't miss this week in culture: a look at rising star and Nyack chef Chris Spezial, Grand View's rock stars and more.
