Tappan Prepares for Trip Back in Time

Annual community day boasts re-enactments, eats

The 27th Colonial Day in Tappan, a perennial celebration on the grounds of the historic DeWint House in Tappan, is set for Saturday.

Experience history at one of the storied venues it was made, and join costumed guides for a tour of the House, an outstanding example of Dutch Colonial architecture and General George Washington’s headquarters during the Revolutionary War.

Colonial army re-enactors will be on hand, along with encampment soldiers, live farm animals and preparations for winter underway in the DeWint House kitchen. Visitors can also watch spinners, lace-makers, quilters, embroiderers, wood carvers, a sheepshearer and colonial singers and dancers, and the Carriage House Museum is also a  must-see.

Children will be able to enjoy apple pressing, learn to juggle and try their hands at stenciling, candle dipping, writing with a quill pen, making a tussie-mussie or a colonial hat.

Admission is free but for some activities a small fee will be charged to cover the cost of materials. Refreshments, including Dutch windmill cookies, will be for sale.

Festivities are set to start at noon at the DeWint House Historic Site, Oak Tree Road and Livingston Street in Tappan.

The Tappantown Historical Society notes that this is an outdoor event, and it will be cancelled in the event of stormy weather.

Colonial Day is being held in conjunction with the 12th Hudson River Valley Ramblea program of more than 200 events being held in the region this month.

(Ed. Note: The Tappantown Historical Society is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization founded in 1965 and permanently chartered by the New York State Board of Regents to preserve, protect, enhance and perpetuate Tappan’s Historic District, architecture, heritage and history.)
