Rockland Community Against Hunger Launches Website

The Rockland Community Against Hunger (RCAH) is creating a way to streamline hunger resources that will also help raise awareness and educate residents on nutrition and the state of hunger in Rockland County.

“Many believe that Rockland is an affluent area with few who go hungry,” said Maria Dowling—CEO of Rockland Jewish Family Service, a participating RCAH agency—in a press release. “The truth is that over 200,000 meals are served every month by food pantries and feeding programs to people with food insecurities in our county.”

The organization was founded in 2010 to bring together Rockland residents, community organizations, food pantries, government and other feeding agencies to collectively end local hunger and educate residents on healthy eating.

RCAH is launching www.rocklandhunger.org, an online resource offering information that aims to mobilize support and educate residents about nutrition and hunger resources in the county.

“We needed to improve collaboration among food pantries and feeding programs in Rockland, to better serve our residents who are in need of food assistance,” said Robert Maher—the executive director of TOUCH-NY Inc. who helped to spearhead the creation the website—in a press release. “We are proud of our new website and know it will bring residents, agencies and our local government together, so we can make hunger in our neighborhoods a thing of the past.”

The event includes the “Rockland Get Fresh” delivery where 25,000 pounds of food from the Northeast Regional Food Bank and Food Bank of the Hudson Valley will be distributed to more than 30 local food pantries and feeding programs free of charge.

New York State Assemblywoman and Chair of the NYS Farm, Food and Nutrition Policy Advisory Committee Ellen Jaffee will serve as the event’s guest speaker.
