Piermont Man, Nyack Bartender Braces for Sandy

Some residents say they don't plan to evacuate—unless they have to.

Although flood-prone areas of Piermont have been asked to evacuate due to the impending high winds, rain and tidal storm surge, some are staying put and bracing for Hurricane Sandy's wrath.

Nick Nuccio, a Piermont resident and a well-known bartender at O’Malley’s in Nyack, is preparing to stay at his home, which sits right on the Hudson River on Piermont Avenue.

“The water was definitely a little higher than usual this morning. It’s only supposed to get worse as the day goes on,” he said. “It looks like there’s going to be some kind of flooding but I hope it’s not going to be too serious.”

He added that they have no plans to evacuate unless they have to and they “have five kayaks” so he’s not too worried. Nuccio has a black lab mix, Gracie and lives there with roommate Chris Jones.

“Gracie is safe and has a life vest,” said Nuccio. “I have my kayaks tied down close to the house. We went shopping this morning and got firewood, two 12 packs, a case of water and I’m making a pot of turkey chili for me and my roommate.”

“His chili is banging,” said Jones. “I just saw a boat out there on the Hudson River that’s just floating. Its sail is broken.”

They added that their power went out twice.

“Thankfully I don’t have to work today because I don’t want to go out in this weather, but O’Malley’s is a good place to be during a storm—booze and food,” said Nuccio.

Late Monday afternoon, Piermont updated its state of emergency to close all streets to traffic.
