Nyack Food Cupboard Needs Help

With holidays approaching and Irene aftermath lingering, donations needed

The Nyack Food Cupboard is stuck in between to tough times: the aftermath of , which left a handful of Nyackers and hungry, and the approaching holidays.

The pantry—based out of in Nyack and nearly two decades old—is seeking food donations in the coming weeks to help recover from a recent shortage and prepare for Thanksgiving. "We need food for the holidays," explained Christine Lundgren of St. Ann's. "Donations are down, and the regional food bank is low, too."

Each November, the pantry creates close to 200 Thanksgiving food baskets for needy Nyackers. And while they generally have enough eats in October, this year is different—they have already run out of rice, canned yams and tomato sauce.

"We'll take anything non-perishable, or things people use everyday," Lundgren added. "Basic cereal, canned vegetables and fruits, instant milk, juices and pasta."

St. Ann's Food Cupboard is an emergency pantry that serves residents of the five Nyacks. And though folks are encouraged to drop by only when particularly needy, the pantry never turns away a hungry family. "If someone comes back weeks in a row, we'll help them out," Lundgren said.
