Traffic 'Dangerous' at Nyack Pre-School

Parents dropping-off, picking-up children cause dangerous traffic, some residents say

The rush to work and school generally entails some tricky maneuvering, but a handful of Nyack residents are saying dangerous driving is not appropriate when youngsters are involved.

Drop-off and pick-up time at , a pre-school educational facility at 85 Depew Ave. in Nyack, can be hairy, residents noted.

At a earlier this month, residents described the traffic problems—which consist of double parking, illegal maneuvers and dangerous passing—as "crazy." The peak traffic hours occur between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m., and 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., on weekdays.

Mary Johnson, a Nyacker who lives nearby, is frustrated with both the traffic and drivers' ambivalence.

"I've heard people say they don’t care if they get a ticket," she said. "It's not right."

Previously, no police were on-hand to regulate. But after hearing a handful of complaints, village officials said they will work to provide security.

"At the very least, maybe we can get auxiliary [police] out there to direct traffic," said Steve Knowlton, a Nyack trustee.

Auxiliary police cannot issue summons, but "if you have two bodies in uniform, it's better than nobody," Knowlton added.

Johnson said she just wants a safe place for the kids. "I'll write the tickets," she noted.
