Jersey Shore Experience in Pearl River Feeds the Hungry

Hilton Pearl River will be transformed into the Jersey Shore during the "Down-the-Shore" event whose proceeds will go toward feeding Rockland's hungry.

This weekend Rockland residents will enjoy the Jersey Shore experience without leaving the county, all while raising money to help feed their needy neighbors at the “Down-the-Shore” event on Sunday.

“We’re not really going to the Jersey Shore,” said People to People Executive Director Diane Serratore. “But we transform the Hilton Pearl River into a Jersey Shore experience with typical boardwalk fare and games including skeeball, whack-a-mole and more.”

The food pantry's event starts at 5 p.m. at the Hilton Pearl River at 500 Veterans Memorial Dr. in Pearl River, and is followed by dinner, an awards reception and live music by The Mighty Spectrum Band at 6 p.m.

The awards ceremony will honor local leaders who have helped feed Rockland’s hungry, including:

  • Joe Allen of Active International, who will receive the Corporate Leadership Award, for his role as People to People’s board president. A seat he has held since 2008.  He is credited with producing a public service announcment and a documentary on suburban hunger and writing op-ed pieces.
  • JCC Rockland is getting the Community Leadership Award for partnering with People to People in Change4Change, a fundraising effort that aims to combat hunger in both Rockland and Israel.
  • The Friend of People to People Award is going to Paul Marks of Leader Carpet for developing a promotion to benefit People to People where a $10 donation to People to People gets you entered into a drawing for a $20,000 flooring makeover by HGTV designer Taniya Nayack.
Proceeds from the event will benefit People to People, Rockland’s largest food pantry, which provides packages of food to about 1,143 households each month. More than $2 million worth of food was donated to People to People in 2012.

“The funds raised by Down-the-Shore will ‘shore up’ People to People’s efforts to help struggling Rocklanders put food on the table and to assure that no Rockland child goes to bed hungry,” said Serratore.

Tickets are limited and cost $150 per person. For more information contact Diane Serratore at diane@peopletopeopleinc.org or visit www.peopletopeopleinc.org.
