Hudson 25K To Begin In Nyack

The RRA's annual race will begin, rather than finish, in Nyack on Sept. 11.

It's settled.

After some back and forth between the village, the River Rowing Association (RRA) and residents, Nyack's trustees have approved the RRA's request to hold its 25K at Memorial Park on Sept. 11.

Certain residents had protested the race because of its use of the municipal dock and the poignant date.

As a compromise, the RRA has decided to begin the race at Memorial Park rather than end at Memorial Park. The race will begin at 6:30 a.m. and finish around 9 a.m., in New Jersey.

"We can be out of there before other boaters begin to arrive," said Ivan Rudolph-Shabinsky, president of the RRA.

As a result of the compromise, the rowers will now be rowing with the current rather than against it—an element that makes a significant difference.

"When you're rowing and the current and tides are against you, it's a lot more difficult," Rudolph-Shabinsky said. Last year, when rowers raced against the current, it added an extra five kilometers to the race.

All of the racers will launch there boats simultaneously at approximately 7:30 a.m. The RRA is hoping to have a fire truck present to start the race with its horn.

Participants will race from the Tappan Zee bridge to the George Washington Bridge. More information about the race is available at the RRA website.
