Dead Sturgeon Washes Up Near Tappan Zee Bridge

A second animal in a week was found dead and washed up on the shore of the Philipse Manor Beach Club in Sleepy Hollow, this time an Atlantic sturgeon.

The club is within close proximity to the Tappan Zee Bridge construction site.

The Journal News reports that the fish remains—believed to be a sturgeon, which is an endangered species—are about 57 inches long and is believed to be only half of the sturgeon.

The corpse of a dog was found on the same beachfront on June 8.

The Journal News said that dead sturgeon in the Hudson River are not uncommon and that the state reported 12 dead in along the river last year, five in 2011 and one in 2010.

The fish found in Sleepy Hollow was the second found deceased in close proximity to the Tappan Zee Bridge Construction area in the last two months, however a state thruway spokesperson told The Journal News that there is no evidence that pre-construction work on the bridge is killing the fish.

The bridge’s construction area is being monitored during pile driving and dredging work for hurt or dead sturgeon. A permit for the project allows two of each species to be killed during construction.
