Canadian Mail Scam Attempts to Dupe Piermont Residents

Piermont residents received fliers in their mail asking for personal banking information and money.

If you live in Piermont, you may have recently been informed you won $4,000.

Hopefully, you didn't buy into it.

Piermont police investigated a fraud case on Aug. 17 when numerous Piermont residents received suspicious fliers in their mailboxes. The fliers alerted Piermont receipients that they had won a "Shoppers' Lottery," and would soon be pocketing a check for almost five grand.

The catch? They first had to pay taxes on the winnings. The flier told residents they were required to hand over $1,200 in government processing fees, and had to reveal personal banking information.

"No one first charges for money someone's won," said MichaelO'Shea, the Piermont Police Chief. Piermont Police notified residents through Nixle, an online alert system.

"The fliers came from Canada," O'Shea continued. The case has been turned over to United States Postal Inspection Service, he added.
