Piermont Prepares for French Fete

Saturday marks third annual celebration

A handful of French baubles have been appearing in Piermont merchant's windows, and it's no coincidence.

This Saturday, the village will celebrate its third-annual Bastille Day, a French holiday that commemorates the storming of the Parisian political prison—and the birth of modern France. Main Street form Tate to Ash will be closed from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m., and feature cuisine, costumes and music.

Festival-goers are encouraged to show up in period clothes—think 18th-century raiment. There will also be French games and entertainment for youngsters.

Tobin noted the festival rivals Nyack's street fairs—and Piermont merchants are looking to make it as frequent. "We do this once a year, but [local merchants] are petitioning to do it four times a year," Tobin said.

It's a particularly lucrative time for merchants, who will set up tents on the street and promote their wares. "It's the only time of the year Main Street is closed," explained Andrew Baez, manager at . Boondocks will be selling summer items like sarongs and garden candles.
