The ACUPCC provides a framework and support for America’s colleges and universities to implement comprehensive plans in pursuit of climate neutrality. The Commitment recognizes the unique responsibility that institutions of higher education have as role models for their communities and in educating the people who will develop the social, economic and technological solutions to reverse global warming and help create a thriving, civil and sustainable society.

“Stewardship and a commitment to community are not new values at St. Thomas Aquinas. Commitment addressing climate change is another face of those enduring values, and the almost 700 signatories of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment welcome St. Thomas Aquinas to the most effective voluntary network for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the promotion of sustainability,” said David Hales, president of Second Nature.

Second Nature is the sponsoring organization of the ACUPCC, which is the organization’s flagship program.  Second Nature's mission is to create a sustainable society by transforming higher education. They accelerate movement toward a sustainable future by serving and supporting senior college and university leaders in making healthy, just, and sustainable living the foundation of all learning and practice in higher education.

“St. Thomas Aquinas College is proud to join efforts to spread climate sustainability awareness to its community through the American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment.  The College will offer forums for educating students, employees and the greater community about the causes and moral dimensions of climate change; assess how we contribute to climate change; and will act to change individual and institutional choices and behaviors to reduce the ways we contribute to climate change,” said Fitzpatrick.

One of the initiatives of the College’s National Center for Ethics and Social Responsibility is sustainability and climate change.  This signing continues St. Thomas Aquinas College’s climate sustainability efforts.  Additional climate sustainability efforts made by the College include joining the Poor and the Catholic Climate Covenant and taking the St. Francis Pledge to Care for Creation, which is a commitment to protect God’s Creation and advocate on behalf of people in poverty who face the harshest impacts of global climate change.  The College is committed to educate its community through incorporating sustainability into curriculum and the daily operations of the institution through these initiatives.
