Piermont Farmers' Market: Produce, Pastries, Pies, Prepared Food and More

A look at upcoming vendors and treats

The begins its seventh year of operation on Sunday, June 5. It will be open every Sunday at the M&T Bank parking lot at Piermont Ave. and Ash St., rain or shine, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

On opening day, Meredith’s Bread of Kingston, NY will reintroduce an onion/cheese bread, which debuted upstate two weeks ago, to its baked goods line. The bakery had offered an onion/cheese bread a few years ago but a different recipe and new ingredients are being used for the 2011 product.

Meredith’s Bread will also sell apple, blueberry and cherry pies; blueberry and raspberry jams; and blueberry banana bread and muffins. Later in the season, it will sell custard, mince and pumpkin pies at the Piermont market.

Bread Alone's Greenmarkets Manager Debbie Polaski said, "On opening Sunday we will offer raspberry rhubarb pie and raspberry crumb cake made with fresh rhubarb from Silimar Farm (Millerton, NY) and frozen raspberries from Wilklow Orchards (Highland, NY)." Throughout the season, her bakery, located in Boiceville, NY, will sell certified organic, whole grain breads and handcrafted pastries.

This season, Ken Migliorelli's Migliorelli Farm of Tivoli, NY plans to stock its stand with cooking greens, salad greens, root vegetables, legumes, squash, tomatoes, garlic, onions, melons, apples, pears, peaches, nectarines, plums, apricots and later corn.

Pika Roels, owner of Pika's Farm Table's in Big Indian, NY, said, "We are bringing our chicken, lobster and crab potpies and our all-natural quiches and tarts. Also coming are our chowders and lobster bisque, nut free basil pesto, fresh salsa, bruschetta toppings and empanadas."

A new vendor, Millbrook Winery of Millbrook, NY, owned by John Dyson, will offer its 2010 Tocai Friulano ($20), 2009 New York Chardonnay ($15), Hunt Country Red ($15)  and 2008 New York Cabernet Franc ($20) at the Piermont Farmers’ Market. Prices include tax.

Millbrook's wine offerings may change as the season progresses but this selection plus more will be available on June 5. In addition, a discount coupon for a “two for one” vineyard tour with wine tasting will be given purchasers of Millbrook products at the Piermont’ Farmers’ Market.

At its stand, Benmarl Winery of Marlboro, NY will sell a number of  2009 white wines to include Slate Hill, Seyval Blanc and Traminette and several 2009 red wines including Merlot, Zinfandel, DeChaunac and Frontenac. Benmarl may be the nation's oldest continuously operated winery—it traces its roots back to the early 1800's when started by Andrew Jackson Caywood; a name change was made to Benmarl when the Caywood property was purchased by the Miller family in 1957.

Nirmala Gupta reports that Bombay Emerald Chutney Company of Yorktown, NY will bring five spicy chutneys packed in jars, frozen samosas, and frozen koftas. The chutneys are Royal Tomato (mild spicing), Royal Plum (mild), Royal Cranberry (medium), Royal Pomegranate (spicy) and Royal Mint (extra spicy). No color, preservatives, or oil are used in any of the chutneys. No sugar added to two of the chutneys: Royal Tomato and Royal Mint chutney.

Keishon Johnson at Puregoodies, a new vendor from Norwalk, CT and Brooklyn, NY, said, "We will offer six variations of toffee ranging from milk chocolate to dark and sweet to savory, made with ingredients such as Madagascar vanilla, bergamot, fine ground espresso beans, artisan sea salts, cayenne, and even U.S. bred Berkshire pork." The toffees are preservative free and gluten free.

The cheese selection from new vendor Valley Shepherd Creamery in Long Valley, NJ will include Brielle, Crottin, Califon Tomme, Ewgurt, Fairmount, Nettlesome, Oktoberkaas, Oldwick Shepherd, Pepato Shepherd, Perlitta, Sheepamid, Sheep Ricotta, Shepherd's Basket, Smokey Shepherd, Tewksbury, and Valley Thunder. Students interested in enrolling in paid internships running from three to seven months can obtain more information at Valley Shepherd Creamery's stand.

Tierra Farms in Valatie, NY, started out as a vegetable farm but in an effort to keep busy during the winter, it sought out and entered a number of other food businesses. Its side ventures thrived and today Tierra Farms provides a multitude of roasted and dried organic products including:

  • Coffee beans. Dark roast from New Guinea, decaffeinated from Sumatra, espresso roast from Nicaragua, medium roast from Mexico and blends 
  • Dark chocolate covered nuts and fruit. Almonds, berries, cashews, coconut, cranberries, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, raw seeds including sunflower seeds, raw cacao nibs and more
  • Dried fruit. Apple rings, apricots, blueberries, cherries, dates, figs, mango, papaya spears, pears, pineapple rings, prunes, strawberries and more
  • Nut butters. Includes chocolate honey cashew, chocolate hazelnut,maple almond and maple hazelnut 
  • Roasted nuts. Almonds, cashews, pecans, pistachios, macadamia, pepitas, sunflower seeds and walnuts

Other vendors include Bodhitree Farm of Jobstown, NY with cut flowers, fruit and vegetables, Calcutta Kitchens of Norwalk, CT with prepared foods, Doc Pickle, Llc of Wayne, NJ and Guyank Brand of Woodhaven, NY (a specialty food revolving vendor).
