Piermont Farmers' Market Prepares for 2011 Season

Vendors unveil wares to be sold at their stands during 2011 as Community Markets, a local organizer of farmers' markets, celebrates its 20th anniversary

On Sunday, June 5, the will begin its seventh year of operation. The market will be open every Sunday, rain or shine, at Piermont Ave. and Ash St. in the M&T Bank parking lot from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

Many of the food products to be sold at the Piermont Farmers' Market and other farmers' markets in Rockland and Westchester Counties this coming season were on display and available for sampling by the press at the celebration of the 20th anniversary of Community Markets, the network's organizer. The festivities took place on April 4 at Community Markets' newly opened headquarters in Ossining.

Millbrook Vineyard & Winery, owned by John Dyson, will make its first appearance at the Piermont market. Formerly a dairy farm, Millbrook occupies 130 acres of steep and rolling hills—30 of these acres are planted with grapes.

Current varietals include Chardonnay (13 acres) Pinot Noir (5 acres), Cabernet Franc (7 acres) and Tocai Friulano (5 acres). Winemaker John Graziano, employed by Millbrook since 1984, has been the the company's only winemaker since its establishment. Currently he is producing approximately 10,000 to 12,000 cases of  wine annually from Millbrook's fruit, fruit from New York and from Millbrook's California vineyards.

Community Markets was founded by Miriam Hass in Ossining in 1991 to bring fresh produce to local neighborhoods after she became disillusioned by the wilted greens at a local grocery.  

Only farmers, growers or producers and their family members or employees are permitted to sell at the farmers' markets. Middlemen, brokers or resellers are excluded. Crafts, jewelry and clothing vendors are not accepted for participation.

Other farmers' markets managed by Community Markets serve the Westchester County communities of Croton-on-Hudson, Larchmont, Mamaroneck, Mount Kisco, New Rochelle, Ossining, Pelham, Pleasantville, Rye, and Tarrytown, the Rockland County community of Spring Valley and all New York City boroughs except Staten Island.
