Pearl River Downtown Trick or Treating Canceled

The annual trick or treating sponsored by the Pearl River Chamber of Commerce has been canceled.

The Pearl River Chamber of Commerce announced late Tuesday that the annual trick or treating at Pearl River downtown businesses has been canceled due to poor conditions, ongoing power outages and schools being closed.

The event had been scheduled for 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The Village of Piermont had already canceled all Halloween activities and Orangetown officials urged extreme caution for parents allowing their children to go trick or treating Tuesday.

Though many businesses on Central Avenue were open with power restored Tuesday night, others still are not and Pearl River Schools are still closed Wednesday. Pearl River Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Morgano advised parents against taking their children trick or treating Tuesday.

"While it is a parental decision, I would suggest that the danger of being out with exposed wires and falling branches outweigh any benefits of trick or treating," Morgano said.

Orange and Rockland Utilities continues to warn residents to be careful of downed wires in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.
