M&T Introduces Latino Financial Literacy Program

M&T Bank introduced a new financial literacy program directed to help the local Latino community Thursday at the branch in Nyack.

Members of the M&T Latino Resource Group of Albany/Hudson Valley joined in creating the program. Gisela Gomez, Chair of the group and Commercial Service Relationship Liaison for M&T, explained the goals and function of the program, which launches in January 2014.

"This new culturally-specific financial literacy program will provide educational seminars with financial professionals to help members of the local Latino community plan for their future," Gomez said. "From teenagers to seniors, members of the community will have an opportunity to learn valuable life lessons through presentations and activities tailored to various language levels, so materials and concepts are understandable."

She said the first seminar, Basic Banking, will be designed for young adults. It will include opening a bank account and financial terminology.

Gomez said that enhancing financial literacy is a priority for M&T.

"Our bankers visit schools and community groups throughout the year to share their knowledge on financial issues, and we are always looking for opportunities to expand the number of educational services offered in our communities," Gomez said. "This will be a free program that could have a positive impact in the Nyack community and we think partnering with local schools, churches and non-profits to host the seminars is a great way for M&T to offer support to our region."
