At Nyack Farmers' Market, a Family Affair

Check out organic produce at Taliaferro Farms

If you're seeking fresh produce, head over to Taliaferro Farms at Nyack's Farmers' Market on Thursdays—you can find USDA certified organic produce including eggplant, carrots, cabbage, tomatoes, squash and watermelon.

But there's a caveat: as the afternoon goes on, the lines grow longer—and the good stuff goes fast.

Taliaferro Farms has roots in New Paltz, when in 1995 Sylvester “Pete” Taliaferro and his wife, Robin, purchased the land. Taliaferro has worked on farms since high school and knows his way around the land; the land is operated by Pete, his wife and their three children.

The family grow 34 acres of vegetables and 14 acres of fruit. They also raise chickens, produce eggs, grow flowers and make milk, cheese, yogurt and fudge. Everything is available at their booth.

This farm isn't like all farms. Besides selling at the four farmers' markets, Taliaferro Farms is part of CSA, or Community Supported Agriculture. This means different people purchase a share of the future crops before they are grown; it helps the farmers with expenses, and ensures the customers healthy fruits and veggies.
