A Chance to Buy, Sell & Barter

Nyack Plaza's new weekend bazaars will showcase local merchants and support a admirable cause.

Nyack residents will soon have the opportunity to buy and sell—or just plain barter—their wares on weekends.

Beginning August 7, the Nyack Plaza Tenant Committee will host Saturday and Sunday bazaars at Nyack Plaza. Participants are encouraged to be creative with their merchandise—anything from produce to antiques, said Salahudin Rahim, the vice president of the Tenant Committee. Rahim helped put together the project.

"Anything that people want to bring is welcome," Rahim said. "It's an open market for anyone who wants to sell."

The bazaar is an attempt to jump-start fundraising initiatives for the Tenant Committee, Rahim explained. To reserve a space for two days, merchants must pay $15 and supply their own tables.

"We want to raise money to fund events for [the Plaza's] young people," Rahim said. "Like bus trips and picnics."

"The money will also to be used to augment security," he added,

Plaza management once supplied funding for recreation, but has since stopped; as a result, the Tenant Committee has taken fundraising initiatives upon themselves.

"We're going to raise the money ourselves," Rahim said. "The bazaar is just one means."

Other programs include bake sales and raffles, he added.

The bazaars will run Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sundays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
