October's Street Fair: What To Expect

Thousands expected to sample the diverse art, culture and food of Nyack at large outdoor gathering

This weekend, thousands of people are expected to descend upon Nyack to attend one of the municipality's signature events.

On Sunday, Oct. 10, Main Street and Broadway will play host to the Nyack Street Fair. Organizers have dubbed this event famous, and with good reason—it has been taking place since 1971, and always draws large crowds from regions well beyond Rockland County.

The gathering is sponsored by the Arts, Crafts and Antique Dealers Association (ACADA). John Dunnigan, owner of Pickwick Bookstore on Broadway and president of ACADA, said he believes street fairs and other outdoor events like SeptemberFest succeed in Nyack because of the Village's ambience.

Dunnigan said people are taken with Nyack's unique collection of architecture, shops and restaurants situated in an area close to the Hudson River.

"The setting for an outdoor event is perfect, especially in the fall," he added.

The Village's uniqueness will be very much on display Sunday. Pat Tita, co-owner of PJS Promotions, a co-sponsor of the Nyack Street Fair, said she expects nearly 230 vendors to appear. Included will be artists, craftsmen, photographers and antiques dealers. She said more than 100 of these vendors call Nyack home.

Tita said visitors will have the opportunity to admire and purchase many different items like artwork, antiques and hand crafted jewelry.

"At many street fairs, only retail establishments are on display," Tita said. "What sets the Nyack event apart from a number of others is the diversification people have to choose from. In Nyack, there is truly something for everyone."

And the fair is not only for adults. There is expected to be a children's area where kids can play while their parents shop.

Dunnigan said gatherings like this are a great way to promote Nyack.

"People come from as far away as Bergen County, NJ; New York City, Long Island and Connecticut and quickly learn all we have to offer," he explained. "Long after these events end, our visitors usually come back and continue to go to our stores and restaurants."

"Large gatherings like street fairs are no-brainers," he added. "We have to let people know Nyack is something special."

The fair begins at 10 a.m. and lasts until 5 p.m. Organizers are encouraging everyone to attend.

"We want everyone to visit us and have a great time," Dunnigan said. "The Nyack Street Fair is an upbeat event that promises fun for everybody."
