Nearby Food Co-op to Host Piermont Author

A major defender of proper nutrition and all things unprocessed, Gussow will be speaking at Hungry Hollow Co-op

The Hungry Hollow Co-op in Chestnut Ridge—which has been around for 35 years—writes this description on their Facebook page:

“We, the owner/members and the staff of the Hungry Hollow Co-op, are dedicated to providing, at a just value, the healthiest foods available in an atmosphere of warmth and friendliness.”

It's an appealing description—particularly because membership is not required to shop at Hungry Hollow. With an everyday "grab-and-go" menu that includes leek and zucchini soup, broiled salmon, veggie lasagna and more, the store is filled to the brim with fresh, organic and environmentally-sound eats. There's also a deli, bakery, full kitchen, body care products and vitamins.

And on Friday, March 18, Hungry Hollow will host Piermont resident, author and village trustee Joan Gussow. From 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., Gussow will be reading from her most recent book, Growing Older: A Chronicle of Death, Life, and Vegetables. A discussion and signing will follow, and books will be available for purchase.

Gussow will also be the keynote speaker at the Clarkstown Environmental Summit at Clarkstown South High School on Saturday, March 5 with a speech titled “Where You Eat From Matters.”

In addition to writing four books and numerous articles, Gussow is a professor emeritus, farmer, noted food activist and the former chair of the Nutrition Education Program at Teachers College, Columbia University.

Plan to arrive early, space is very limited. Light refreshments will be served.

Correction: A previous version of this story referred to Hungry Hollow as a gardening co-op, not a food co-op. We regret the error.
