Happy Dogs in Piermont

Lisa Grubb's paintings—created in Piermont—are recognized around the world.

Walking through Piermont, you may have spotted a bright, endearing painting on a garbage can.

And in New City, you may have noticed similar sprawling, brightly-colored pieces on a few walls.

If you've discovered these playful works of art, then you've seen the work of Lisa Grubb.

Lisa Grubb is the founder of Happy Dog Gallery, one of the many art galleries around Piermont's Flywheel Park. Grubb grew up in the metro area—and with a ballet dancer for a mother—where she was always encouraged to use her imagination and express herself creatively. As the years went on, her artistic talent grew into what it is today: a style recognized world-wide.

When you walk into Happy Dog, you're immediately surrounded by pop art (including, of course, the seminal Campbell's soup can). And Grubb takes the gallery's title literally: there are different takes on happy dogs—and happy animals, for that matter—throughout the space, and in gigantic proportions. The art towers to the ceiling in some parts of the room.

But there are acrylic paintings with different subjects, too; city scenes and martini glasses, vibrant fruit and classic Americana. Each painting has a style unique to Grubb—it's easy to recognize a piece of her artwork before you see her signature.

In Happy Dog, there are prints of her work available for purchase, along with the original canvas paintings on display. There is a binder full photos and newspaper clips of all the unusual places Happy Dog has been around the world, like Europe, Japan and Canada.

Grubb doesn't call it quits at art, though. Two of her children's books—Happy Dog and Happy Dog Sizzles—are also growing in popularity. And she has created versions of Looney Tune characters, Disney characters and Marvel characters for the companies themselves. There's even a smart car in Austria with a Happy Dog image on it.

Charities are also important to this self-taught artist, who does work for both PETA and Ronald McDonald House, among others.

The Happy Dog Gallery in Piermont is open on weekends, and by appointment on weekdays. Lisa Grubb is often at the gallery herself, ready and eager to talk to any passer-by.
