ABBIE: The Story of Abbie Hoffman

Benefit for Arts Angels & Rivertown Film

The original Occupy Movement comes to Nyack on Friday, Jan. 20, with ABBIE: The Story of Abbie Hoffman.  This one-man play is based on the counter-culture writings of Abbie Hoffman.  It stars Nyack local Bern Cohen, who also wrote and produced the play.  ABBIE has been seen at various venues in and around NYC, including the West End Theater.

With permission of Hoffman’s wife, Cohen has taken numerous socio-political writings and speeches of the sixties activist and turned them into a solo performance.  The performance begins in the lecture hall with the one-time member of the Chicago Seven and symbol of cultural rebellion, and also includes film footage emphasizing aspects of the writings and protests.

The upcoming performance will be a joint benefit for Arts Angels & Rivertown Film.   Arts Angels supports the fine art, drama and music activities of students in the Nyack Public Schools; Rivertown Film is dedicated to bringing independent, foreign and documentary films to the community.  Both are nonprofits in Rockland County and all proceeds from the evening will support the efforts of the two organizations.

The show begins at 8 p.m. at Nyack Center.  Contact Rivertown Film for more info and tickets ($20 regular and $10 students): http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/217960
