St. Stephen's Food Pantry Grows

The food pantry at St. Stephen's Church in Pearl River draws from around the county and provides food for nearly 70 families. The next pickup is Jan. 3 at 7 p.m.

A group of volunteers spent their morning after Christmas at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church organizing the church’s food pantry.

The church gives out food each month to a bit fewer than 70 families, up from the 22 families the pantry provided food for as of a year and a half ago and just over 40 as recently as August, according to Pastor Susan Fortunato.

“It’s a miracle that we’re able to provide food for all these families,” she said.

The food for the pantry this month came from individual donors at the church, the Pearl River United Methodist Church and the Nyack Homeless Project. Wednesday's work followed a pick-up from Nyack.

The church has had a food pantry for more than 20 years. The next pickup by those in need is scheduled for Thursday Jan. 3 at 7 p.m.

The Rockland Community Foundation salutes the great work being done by the volunteers at St. Stevens Food Pantry and by those organizations who have donated food. It is so important to remember that there are families in Rockland County who do not always know where their next meal is coming from. Your selflessness is an inspiration to Rockland residents.
