Rockland Set to Graduate a New Group of Volunteer Firefighters

Eighty four volunteer probationary firefighters are slated receive their state firefighter certificates in a graduation ceremony set for 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Rockland Community College's Cultural Arts Center.

The volunteers being honored, representing 22 of Rockland’s 26 all-volunteer departments, will receive their certificates from their Rockland County fire instructors, in front of their fire chiefs, department volunteers and their invited families and friends in the auditorium.

The class also includes newly-trained firefighters from Warwick and Washingtonville in Orange County. Click here for photos from the graduation ceremony.

The graduation ceremony is free and open to the public.

In Rockland County, all local fire departments are staffed 100 percent by men and women who are volunteers. There are nearly 2,500 active volunteer firefighters in Rockland.

The graduates in this current class gave 87 hours of their own time to attend the state’s Firefighter I course. Many of them went on to take the 27 hours advanced Firefighter II course as well.

“While the state average of Firefighter I graduates is around 70 percent, Rockland continues to be among that state leaders with a graduation rate of more than 90 percent,” said John Kryger, deputy Fire Coordinator. “That number is a tribute to our graduates, our instructor staff, and the Fire Training Center which enjoys a national reputation.”

The county also has a 75 percent rate of those graduates going on to the advanced Firefighter II course.
