A New Spin on Freedom Songs

Welcome to 'About Town,' a column that will keep you up to the minute with what's what, who's who and what the village is talking about. Check in often, because we will be updating often. And if you see something... say something

Catch a riveting hump-day flick tonight when Rivertown Films presents the documentary Soundtrack for a Revolution at 8 p.m. at Nyack Center (58 Depew Avenue).

Putting a fresh spin on the classic freedom songs that were sang on picket lines, in paddy wagons and in jail cells during the civil rights movement, top artists such as John Legend, Joss Stone, Richie Havens, The Roots and Wyclef Jean bring new light to this powerful, inspirational music.

The film—directed by Bill Guttentag and Dan Sturman with Danny Glover as Executive Producer—includes archival footage, interviews and music that has come to represent the civil rights movement. Stick around afterwards for a live performance by the male chorus of the First Baptist Church of Spring Valley.

Have you heard of the reading of the rune stones? This ancient technique is a way to uncover energies that may be blocking your ability to attain your full potential and joy.

If you're interested in this supernatural diversion, (100 Main Street) is the place to go.  Wednesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. you can get your energy read—and enjoy a great meal and a drink.

The suggested donation of $10 goes to to benefit Nyack's hungry, so no matter what you'll be giving (and hopefully receiving some good energy) for a great local cause.
