Nyack Celebrates Re-Dedication of Newly Enhanced Library

Community turns out Saturday afternoon for ribbon cutting

A gala three-and-a-half years in the making went off this past Saturday, with Nyackers celebrating the re-dedication of the .

The outdoor ceremony marked the culmination of an and cost around $10 million. Improvements include state-of-the-art checkout technology, an enhanced Carnegie Room and expanded children, teen, computer and history rooms.

The portion of Main Street in front of the library was closed off for a ribbon cutting, small fete and several speeches.

"It takes a whole community to support and build a library," said James Mahoney, the Nyack Library's director. "[The new library] is a community marketplace of ideas and social interplay."

Michael Esmay, the project's chief architect and mayor of Upper Nyack, also spoke about the completed renovations.

"I feel confident that with this project we've been successful in bringing the library into the 21st century," he said. "And we've been successful in wedding the old and new and fitting the library into a Nyack setting."

Roger Seiler, president of the library's board of trustees, took the podium to thank two individuals instrumental to the renovation: Mark Davis, superintendent of work on the site, and Stephen Hoefer, the library's manager of operations and finance. Hoefer acted as general contractor for the renovation and ensured the historical integrity of the original building was maintained.

"The trustees of the library have enormous appreciation and respect for everything the staff does," Seiler added. "A building can do nothing; it's people that make it happen."
