30-Plus FDs Set to Roll in Nyack Fire Parade

Chiefs Inspection Parade kicks off at 2 p.m., goes through downtown Nyack.

More than 30 fire departments are set to be part of the Nyack Fire Department's Chiefs Inspection Parade on Saturday in Nyack.

The parade is part of a Nyack tradition that honors the chief of the all-volunteer fire department. Overseeing the parade from the reviewing area will be Nyack Fire Department Chief James Petriello.

The parade kicks off at 2 p.m., with the route going from Midland Avenue in Upper Nyack south to Main Street in Nyack, east to Broadway and onto Cedar Hill Avenue.

Judges will review the fire departments participating in the parade, with trophies awarded to the best units. Trophies will be awarded in a ceremony at 7:30 p.m. at the Nyack firehouse on Catherine Street, just off Route 9W.

Among the trophies that will be award will be one for the best fire truck from among the eight companies of the Nyack Fire Department. Last Saturday, all eight companies showed off their trucks at an inspection at the Catherine Street firehouse.

Petriello and a group of fire chiefs from neighboring volunteer fire departments reviewed the Nyack fire trucks, which local volunteers have spent weeks preparing for the inspection. Petriello said the inspection is a Nyack tradition, which has its roots in efforts to ensure the department's firefighting equipment is in top shape.

The results of the inspection have been kept secret all week and will be revealed on Saturday night.

With the event on Saturday, the parade route will be closed to traffic.

I guess better late than never. LaCorte is serving his 4th year as Mayor and was Trustee for I thinkRead More 4 years before that. This year is the only time he has brought the idea to the village about participating in this program. He is motivated by the opportunity of getting positive press for his County Executive campaign. The village should have been involved in this program ( as well as the Americorps program) long before this. On a positive note, hopefully the Village will continue this worthwhile partnership for many years to come.
