JCC Holds Community Menorah Lighting (VIDEO)

It was the third annual event

JCC Rockland hosted its third annual community candle lighting Thursday night, celebrating not only the sixth night of Chanukah but also the organization’s fifth anniversary on its West Nyack campus.

“Our community has grown exponentially by simply moving to a larger building,” said JCC Rockland Board of Directors President Pam Greenspan. “Our fitness center numbers have improved, the number of seniors coming into our facility have increased and our Israel team and sports programs have expanded.”

There are six programs total operating out of the JCC Rockland’s West Nyack campus, and Greenspan said other programs similarly have increased in size since the move.

“We’ve very excited that all six Jewish organizations that are located in this campus will be joining together tonight to light the candles,” said JCC Rockland's CEO David Kirschtel.

Each program had a representative light a candle. The six programs are JCC Rockland, Israel Bonds, Jewish Federation of Rockland County, Rockland Jewish Family Service, Rockland Jewish Academy and Hadassah.

“Tonight we rededicate ourselves to the spirit of Chanukah, which means dedication,” said Rabbi Craig Scheff, of the Orangetown Jewish Center. “We rededicate ourselves to building this building, to establishing this center as a place for all of our individual smaller communities.”

Along with the menorah lighting Thursday night, there were performances by the Rockland Jewish Academy Choir, Temple Beth Sholom Choir and Makhaylat Kol Chai, from Montebello Jewish Center. There were also arts and crafts activities for kids, as well as some Chanukah food.
