The Road to Nowhere

What is a cyclist to do when the winter weather doesn't cooperate? We embark on a journey called "The Road to Nowhere".

Here we are in the first week of March already!  The 110 mile Gran Fondo New York is fast approaching and with the winter weather, I have been forced to do my bike rides inside.  For those of you who do not know, we cyclists try to train year round in order to be ready for the warm months of riding on the road.  Many of us have "bike trainers" in which we put our bicycle on a special stand that allows us to create a stationary bike with the bike we ride on the road.

The trainer is a great option and the first few workouts are fine.  However, week after week of climbing on the bike in my living room for a few hours on Sunday and at least an hour a day during the week gets very tedious and monotonous.  Some days, it feels like torture.  But I do it because I'm afraid of the condition I will be in if I don't.

By riding on the trainer, it is difficult to gage my fitness.  I can't tell if I'll be able to climb all of those hills, I hope I can.  I can't tell if I will have enough endurance to finish the 110 miles, I think I will.  I have come to trust that putting in the workouts on the trainer can only help me on May 19.  I also have faith that I will be riding on the road again soon although on days like today--28 degrees and windy this morning--it seems that it will be far into the future.
