Local business owners talk positives, negatives of change
Nyack's new parking timetable hasn't had much time to settle in—it's just seven days old—but the first weekend with overnight paid parking already has some merchants talking. The overhaul switched paid times to afternoons and late-night—from now on, munimeters need feeding between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., and between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. (Read the details here.) For Rivertown Films, the local film organization that screen flicks at Nyack Center, the revamped schedule is a plus. "It's good for us—now our customers don't have to pay for parking," said Matthew Seig, the group's executive director. Movies are screened in the evening, before paid parking kicks in. "We're the lucky ones in this situation," he added. Rivertown Films' first screening …

Senior citizens learned how to surf the web and about internet safety
Senator David Carlucci (D-Rockland/Orange) held his first ever Senior Technology Seminar to give senior citizens throughout Rockland County the opportunity to learn more about computer technology. The free, two-hour long program held at Rockland Community College was a hands-on experience for seniors to learn about e-mail, the internet, operating computer devices, and other basic technology skills. Two professional librarians: Veronica Reynolds, who focuses in the field of Collection and Web Development at New City Library, and Lauren Moore, Adult Services librarian at Valley Cottage Library taught the Friday class. “It is so important for our seniors to have the knowledge and understanding for how to utilize new technology,” said …
Survey cost capped at $9,050.
The Clarkstown Town Board authorized the Department of Environmental Control’s director to hire a New City land surveyor to survey and prepare a subdivision map of the Traphagen property in West Nyack. The town purchased the nine-acre property along Germonds Road last year for $900,000. The property is adjacent to Germonds Park. The survey and subdivision map of the 9.23-acre parcel will be prepared by Atzl, Scatassa and Zigler. The property includes a house and a historic building, which could be one of the oldest structures in the county. When the town board was considering the purchase, the possibility of a subdivision was discussed. At Tuesday night’s board meeting, Attorney Amy Mele said the property with the house would be …
U.S. Supreme Court has been asked to strike down state restrictions on corporations.
Leading a bipartisan coalition of 22 states and the District of Columbia, New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman has filed a brief urging the Supreme Court to uphold state campaign finance laws in the wake of its 2010 Citizens United decision. In American Tradition Partnership v. Bullock, the Court has been asked to automatically strike down Montana's campaign finance law on the ground that it violates the First Amendment rights of corporations. The Schneiderman-led coalition rejects this position, arguing the states have a compelling interest in regulating corporate spending in state and local elections, and that the Court should not automatically invalidate state campaign finance laws without a full hearing. “For years, states …

The event allows kids to climb on the department's vehicles.
While nobody could drive or operate the vehicles, luckily for the kids, and perhaps not so lucky for the parents, the horns still worked at Saturday’s Orangetown Highway Department Open House. And so as children packed the grounds of the Orangetown Highway Department, located on Route 303 in Orangeburg, they took turns climbing into the 15-plus vehicles on display, playing with the steering wheel and, of course, honking the horn. Saturday’s was the 16th annual open house hosted by the highway department. “It’s basically to let the public and all of our taxpayers know how much equipment we have, the kind of work that we do and how well our people take care of them,” said Orangetown Highway Superintendent James Dean. “There’s a big …

Pipeline Traverses Kakiat County Park in Montebello residential neighborhood and Viola Elementary School
In light of a expansion project proposed by Algonquin Gas Transmission Corporation for its pipeline facility in northwestern Ramapo, two Rockland County legislators introduced a resolution to urge Algonquin to submit plans to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for a secondary means of access to its facility. The resolution introduced by Vice Chairman Alden H. Wolfe and Legislator Douglas J. Jobson also urges FERC to reject the application for expansion in the absence of a plan for secondary access. The resolution was unanimously passed by the County Legislature at its May 15th meeting. Algonquin presently has an application before FERC for approval of an expansion to the facility, which serves as a hub to interconnect …
Officials: Stop work order issued; renovation being done without permits, OSHA investigating workplace violations. Firefighters, workers exposed to asbestos.
The Village of Spring Valley has issued a stop work order at the old Spring Valley High School, where officials said renovation work being done without permits led to the collapse of a mezzanine in the auditorium and a worker being briefly trapped in the rubble. Although two workers suffered only minor injures in the collapse at the building, now the site of the United Talmudical Academy, officials said workers and emergency personnel were exposed to asbestos inside the building. Spring Valley Fire Department Capt. Ray Canario said that all of his departments volunteers who were in the building on Friday to investigate the collapse had to turn in their firefighting "bunker gear" so it could be bagged and stored in a secure area to be …
Link Elementary School students go inside justice system.
The jurors in Clarkstown Town Judge Howard Gerber's courtroom in New City on Friday weren't from the typical jury pool. They were kids. Second-graders to be precise. Students from Clarkstown school district's Link Elementary School visited Gerber's courtroom at the town police and courts building at 20 Maple Ave. for a close-up look at the justice system. During the visit, Gerber discussed the different courts — ranging from local justice courts to the U.S. Supreme Court — with the students and then gave them a chance to experience the system. The students took part in a mock trial in which they experienced the roles of defendant, prosecutor, defense counsel and jury. While on Maple Avenue, Link students also visited the New City Fire …

This is an example of a "push poll" which slants the choices to achieve the desired results. How about replacing the word corporations and put the word unions instead? I do not think the Patch wants to publicize the results.   more ›
