Residents vote in $72.6 million fiscal plan
Nyack Schools' verified vote results are in, and residents overwhelmingly voted in favor of this year's $72.6 million budget. 1,252 voted to pass the fiscal plan, and 374 cast ballots against. The two newcomers running for two school board seats—Dan Kaplan and Karen Hughes—secured seats with 1,102 and 1,044 votes, respectively. Drop out of Rick Santorum, wide lead for Romney in polls, among signs
New York's Republican presidential primary is today, but don't expect the excitement seen from earlier nomination contests. With former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum having dropped out earlier this month, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney is now being referred to as the "presumptive front runner" in published media reports. Even in the closing weeks of Santorum's candidacy, polls for New York (including Quinnipiac and Siena) showed Romeny with large double-digit leads. Santorum is still listed on the ballot, according to records from the state's board of elections. Rye Town Supervisor Joe Carvin released information from his quarterly campaign filing report today revealing he has raised $75,000 cash and loaned his campaign $1,000,000 of his own money to face off against incumbent US Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-17th District). Carvin's campaign reveals he has $1,054,000 cash on hand and that he has spent $32,000 so far. In keeping with his campaign launch remarks, Carvin said in his statement that his bid was about fiscal reform and not taking up long-term tenure in Congree- a nod to Lowey's 23 years in public office. Scarsdale is getting ready for a visit from Vice President Joseph Biden this evening. The vice president will be traveling to Scarsdale tonight after a campaign stop in Exeter, New Hampshire today at noon. "In the afternoon, the Vice President will travel to Scarsdale, New York, to attend a campaign event at 6:15 p.m.," the Office of the Vice President said in a statement. The Rockland and Westchester Republican Committees joined forces Tuesday night to nominate a single candidate for the 17th Congressional District. Joseph Carvin of Port Chester received the unanimous support of the several hundred committee members at the convention at Clarkstown Town Hall in New City. Trustees win unopposed in South Nyack, Upper Nyack and Grand View
A staggeringly low number of village voters hit the polls yesterday, though the lackluster numbers were likely due to no-contest bids. Two trustees ran for election without challengers in each of the three villages with open posts—South Nyack, Upper Nyack and Grand View.
