"The heroine is born and raised in Nyack," Zimmermann explained. "And a lot of the action takes place there."

"I figured I'd keep the apocalypse local," she added.

It's a concept that will likely keep readers enthralled. Not only will they witness society react to an influx of shambling monsters, but the setting will be an environment they're completely familiar with.

"Readers can relate to the places and people," she said, noting that one scene has the protagonist driving down Nyack's Main Street and reminiscing about 's decadent chocolate cake.

Other familiar locales? , and the Tappan Zee Bridge.

Zimmerman was inspired by the current zombie-craze, but the specific catalyst was AMC's "The Walking Dead" television series, based on the popular comic books.

"I always loved zombie films, and this show is great," she noted, touching on it's gritty realism.

Next week, Zimmermann will talk about her text at the Barnes and Noble bookstore in the Palisades Center. She'll touch on the history of zombies, read passages from her work and answer questions, too.
